The Duchess of Buffalo with live piano by Philip Carli

Constance Talmadge looks alarmed by the Grand Duke's kiss in The Duchess of Buffalo

Another royal Russian confection. Remember the dark gothic horror of The Queen of Spades? Well, this is not that. Instead we get to see Constance Talmadge (who also produced the film) saved from a very awkward love triangle by an actual duchess, who is not from Buffalo. The film’s title, though nothing else in the story, refers to an American woman who was in the news for marrying a Russian Baron three years after her father founded a candy company in Buffalo. In her honor, the film was premiered at Shea’s Buffalo Theatre.

For a link to the livestream and recording, please subscribe ($5 ticket/$10 subscription with access to all of our films). This is what sustains our series of fascinating silent films with Dr. Carli’s wonderful improvised accompaniments and commentary. I will make a final check at noon on Sunday 9/15 for new subscribers and ticket holders who wish to join us live at 2 pm; after the livestream the recording will remain available at the same link.
