Assunta Spina

Italian couple arguing - or not

This 1915 film stands out among other Italian film of the period. The title character, flirtatious Assunta Spina, is played by the Italian diva Francesca Bertini. But rather than depicting her among enormous sets and far-fetched plots about the temptations and dissipations of wealth, it takes us into the homes and lives of a working class family. The verismo style of direction and camera work produces a charming effect of home movies about a couple who might have been your Neapolitan great grandparents – even as their relationship spins out of control.
